Our mission transcends beyond physical training; we are committed to instilling values that ensure success in every aspect of life. We believe in the power of Integrity, Discipline, Kaizen, Teamwork, Enjoyment, and Sisu to create not just exceptional athletes, but extraordinary individuals.
At the end of the day, I believe. I swallowed the “American Dream” Kool-Aid at an early age and have believed in it ever since. I’m the guy that bets on Rocky winning the big fight and the little guy going from rags to riches. I’ve lived this approach my entire life, for good and for bad. I’m also in my late forties now, and I have too many lessons to count in my mental databank. And yet, I’m still a believer.
Mindset
“Mental toughness is to the physical as four is to one.” – Bobby Knight
This is the one. This is it. Each Inch Block is a “must”. Each is critical for success. Some sections can be “faked” longer than other sections. But all must be sound, strengthened, and optimized. But this section is the one. I get asked all the time, “What’s the one thing I need to do to win?” I just shake my head. It’s so sad really. There is never just one thing. Good Lord. Has life ever been that easy to distill it down to one thing?
Knowledge
Here’s the deal…
All six Inch Blocks are critical to your success. You’ll need to have the right Mindset to perform at your highest level (Mindset). You must be extremely knowledgeable in all areas inside and outside your sport (Knowledge). You must optimize your interactions with professional and personal teammates (Teammates). Physically, you must have all the tools to perform at a high level (Training). Then you’ll need to fuel (Nutrition) and rest and heal (Recovery) after each day.
Teammates
Let’s be crystal clear. In this instance, in this book, Teammates are simply anyone and everyone you work with to achieve something, anything. This topic of discussion also falls under the “Head” block because you interact with people verbally. It’s not really a physical skill.
Training
The Mindset Block is my favorite block, by far. Why? You Mindset controls and dictates action. Your mind is everything because your actions make the impact and alter you and your environment. That is usually the goal. Following the natural progression here, the Training Block is my second favorite block. This is where we work. The Grind. The physicality of the Training provides a real, meaningful test for you Mindset. Both Blocks are fully intertwined. You walk into a dark room (physical), you want (mind) to see better (physical). Then you turn on the light (physical). Your mind received what it wanted.
Nutrition
You are what you eat.
You can’t outwork a bad diet.
Two-thirds of your success is Nutrition.
You must eat to perform.
Have you ever heard any of these statements? Yes. Me too. The thing is they are all true. No kidding. Absolutely true. There are countless books and programs for eating. There is no lack of methodologies. Here are some rules you must follow for continued success.
Recovery
“It’s not how hard you can train. It’s how hard you can train, recover, and train as hard again, every day.” – Jim Beebe
KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid (Navy SEAL directive). With that last sentence in mind, the top three “steroids” for you will be food, water, and sleep. If you maximize and optimize those three components, then you will cover the bulk of Recovery. Go back and reread the Nutrition section and make it happen. Eat the right foods in the right quantities. Take your main supplements. Drink a ton of water. And sleep as much as you can. You will be doing very well with Recovery.
Bringing It All Together
Now is where the rubber meets the road. Time to work. I love the planning days and sessions. I’m always left with hope. I have a better plan of where I’m going, and I have high hopes of getting there. I also finish this exercise with renewed vigor and energy. It’s great to feel this way with the annual plan and the quarterly plan. The feeling lasts about two days unfortunately. So, here’s the “hack.” In your daily and weekly plans, spend 1-3 minutes each morning looking over your long-term plans over. If you remind yourself and rejuvenate yourself daily, then the feeling lasts. You very rarely wake each morning running out the door to attack the world and your endeavors. Energy simply doesn’t arrive on your doorstep waiting for you. You must create it daily. Relentlessly.
